Choosing the Right 4WD Hire in Perth

What to Look for in a 4WD Rental

Not all 4WDs are equal, and not all hire companies will give you what you need to ensure your fully prepared for your trip. Here’s what to keep an eye out for:

  • Genuine off-road capability: You’ll want something that handles corrugation, soft sand, and steep tracks with ease.
  • Comfortable camping setup: Especially important for long trips. Make sure your hire includes rooftop tents, plenty of storage,
  • Comprehensive support: Insurance, roadside assistance, and no surprise charges.

Essential Tips Before You Hit the Road

Red dirt track 4wd travel Australia

Know the Weather

WA’s climate can be extreme. Summers are hot and dry, while our winters can be all over the place. It is important to note that during wet months some tracks can become inaccessible. Depending on the month you’re travelling, it’s worth asking our team for some guidance and advice if you’re new to the region.

Winter can be chilly but still great for travelling (especially for inland camping).

See our guide on: The Benefits of Winter Camping in Western Australia.

Pack Smart

Although we provide most essentials for your 4WD Hire, it’s worth bringing:

  • Personal toiletries
  • Lightweight clothing layers
  • Bathers and sun protection
  • Snacks and water bottles

Know the Tracks

Always check road conditions before heading out. Some routes require permits, especially in national parks or Aboriginal lands.

For reliable updates, visit: WA Parks and Wildlife Service.

Check the forecast at the Bureau of Meteorology: Bureau of Meteorology.
