Wildflower Season Australia

Wildflower season is here in West Australia! Spring in Western Australia is where the wondrous colours  of the outback bloom. With over 12,000 species of wildflowers and roughly 60 percent found nowhere else on Earth, the state becomes a botanical spectacle that attracts nature lovers, photographers and road trippers from around the world. When winter rains recede, carpets of daisies, orchids and kangaroo paws burst into bloom, turning dry plains and coastal dunes into colourful tapestries. For adventurers travelling by 4WD camper, this season offers a chance to explore remote regions, set up camp under star-lit skies and wake up to fields of flowers outside your door.

This guide is designed to help you plan an unforgettable spring road trip in a 4xploring 4WD camper. We explain when and where to see Western Australia’s wildflowers, highlight the best 4WD friendly routes, and share tips for responsible travel. Whether you are a first timer seeking pink and white floral scenes or a seasoned explorer chasing rare orchids, this blog hopes to inspire your next adventure and help you plan with confidence.

When is Western Australia’s wildflower season

Because Western Australia spans nearly 2,500 kilometres from north to south, the wildflower season often lasts up to six months. Blooms typically begin in June around Exmouth and Shark Bay, push through the Mid West and Wheatbelt in August, peak around Perth in September, and continue across the South West and South Coast through October and early November.

Different regions of WA will be ideal to view the blooming depending on the months you are travelling.

  • June to July: Cape Range National Park near Exmouth and Shark Bay begin to flower. Cape Range and the Coral Coast can show mulla mulla, Sturt’s desert pea and yellow Hibbertia.
  • August: Wildflower Country in the Mid West (Mingenew, Perenjori, Mullewa) erupts with blankets of pink and white everlastings. Lesueur National Park and Kalbarri see strong displays.
  • September: Peak around Perth and the Coral Coast. Kings Park and the Perth Hills showcase kangaroo paws and everlastings. Wreath flowers appear around Pindar and Mullewa.
  • October to November: South West forests and the South Coast continue blooming with orchids, boronias and hovea. Esperance and Albany still produce excellent late season colour.

Why Western Australia’s wildflowers are special

Kangaroo Paw Flower in Australia

WA hosts the largest collection of wildflowers on Earth and around 60 percent of species are endemic (exclusive to the region). Regions like the Coral Coast and parts of the South West are biodiversity hot spots, which is why you can see everything from vast everlastings to tiny spider orchids in a single road trip. The state floral emblem, the red and green kangaroo paw, is a WA original.

Travelling in a 4WD camper lets you reach remote bloom sites, linger for sunrise light and camp close to trailheads.
